Avoid Shopify Payments ban

Avoid a Shopify Payments ban. Move off the rail before the flag triggers.

Shopify Payments' category-flag risk engine scores your account against the transactions Shopify Payments processes. If Shopify Payments is not processing your transactions, the risk engine has no signals to feed on. Merchants in categories Shopify Payments often restricts sometimes wait for the "under review" email before acting; the cheaper move is proactive — set up own-domain checkout on your own gateway before the flag triggers, and Shopify Payments never gets the chance to score you into a reserve.

The proactive vs reactive tradeoff

Reactive: keep processing through Shopify Payments until the reserve email lands. Then scramble to set up a replacement gateway while payouts freeze for 30-120 days. Every day between the reserve and the replacement is lost revenue plus mounting cash-flow pain.

Proactive: move to own-domain checkout with your own gateway before the flag triggers. Shopify Payments never processes the risky volume so it never scores it into a reserve. You keep the Shopify store, keep the customer data, keep the ad pixels, keep every app — you just take the payment step off the Shopify Payments rail.

Which categories should move proactively

Anything Shopify Payments treats as elevated-risk historically. Kratom, CBD, THCA hemp, delta-8, peptide, adult wellness, vape, IPTV, high-chargeback subscription rebills, dropshipping with 10-30 day fulfillment, weight-loss and muscle-building supplement categories, forex signals, credit repair, MLM-adjacent DTC.

Mainstream categories (apparel, homeware, electronics, standard beauty, non-consumable DTC) typically should not move proactively. Shopify Payments works well for them; leaving it means giving up Shop Pay + native wallet UX for no risk-protection benefit. Reserve the tactic for the categories where the risk is real.

Avoidance vs prevention. Own-domain checkout removes payment-side risk signals from Shopify Payments' engine. It does not stop Shopify itself (the platform, not Shopify Payments) from scanning your product catalog and storefront copy for compliance issues. Both scans exist; the payment-side scan is where most reserves originate for high-risk merchants, which is why the payment-side rerouting has the largest effect.

What Cascade actually does

1

Wire your gateway

Bring the acquirer that already approved your MCC. NMI reseller, offshore acquirer, PXP, Adyen high-risk desk, custom HTTP.

2

Own-domain checkout

checkout.your-brand.com. Shopify Payments express buttons suppressed. Cloaked loader in theme.liquid.

3

Cascade backup

Second MID wired as fallback for when the primary throttles. Order writes back to Shopify tagged [cascade].

What we do NOT do

Frequent questions

How do I avoid a Shopify Payments ban?

Move checkout off Shopify Payments before the category-flag risk score triggers. Own-domain checkout routes transactions through your own gateway, which means Shopify Payments has no payment-side signals to score on your store.

Can I avoid a ban after I have already been reserved?

Reserves already applied stay in place — the frozen funds are stuck with Shopify Payments for the reserve window. What you can avoid is a full termination by moving new checkout traffic off Shopify Payments so the reserve does not keep growing.

Does avoiding Shopify Payments mean giving up Shop Pay?

Yes. Shop Pay is a Shopify Payments product. Wallets on the cascaded checkout depend on the underlying gateway — where your gateway supports Apple Pay or Google Pay, those keep working, but Shop Pay specifically is off.

Is proactive avoidance worth it for a mainstream store?

Usually no. Mainstream categories are Shopify Payments' sweet spot; leaving it before a problem exists gives up real conversion (Shop Pay) for no protection benefit. Avoidance is a high-risk-category tactic, not a universal recommendation.
