Shopify Payments on hold

Shopify Payments on hold: what it means, how long it lasts, what to do this week.

A hold is not a termination. Shopify is pausing payouts while it reviews something about the account. Your store still takes orders, your customers are still charged, and the money sits in the Shopify Payments balance until the review closes. This page explains the three kinds of hold, what Shopify usually asks for, and how merchants keep cash moving in the meantime.

Three different holds, three different outcomes

The notice in your admin says your payouts from Shopify Payments are on hold, but that sentence covers three situations that end very differently.

  1. Review hold. Shopify's risk team wants documents or answers before releasing payouts. Orders keep processing. This is the most common case and usually clears once the request is satisfied.
  2. Reserve on a live account. Shopify keeps a percentage of each payout, or a fixed amount, for a rolling period. You get paid, just less and later. Typical for stores with rising chargebacks, pre-orders or long delivery windows.
  3. Hold after termination. Shopify Payments has closed the account and keeps the remaining balance for the reserve window, commonly up to 120 days, to cover disputes that arrive after the last sale. This is the hold people mean when they say "Shopify froze my money".

Read the email and the admin banner word for word. "On hold pending information" is case one. "A reserve has been applied" is case two. "Your account has been terminated" is case three, and the playbook is different: see frozen funds after a termination.

Why Shopify puts payouts on hold

Shopify does not publish its risk rules, but the triggers merchants report line up with what any acquirer watches:

None of these means you did something wrong. They mean the model that guarantees your payouts has more exposure than it likes, and a person now has to look.

What to send, and how to send it

Reply through the channel Shopify opened, usually the email to the store owner and the banner in the admin. Support chat cannot lift a risk hold; only the payments team can.

1

Answer exactly what was asked

Government ID, business registration, supplier invoices, proof of inventory, bank statement. Send clear, current documents. Do not send extras that raise new questions.

2

Add tracking to every paid order

Shopify reads fulfilment data. Orders marked fulfilled with a carrier and tracking number are the strongest evidence that buyers are receiving goods.

3

Keep refunds and disputes tidy

Refund fast when a buyer asks. Respond to every chargeback with tracking and correspondence. A rising dispute rate during a review is the one thing that turns a hold into a termination.

Do not open a second store to route around the hold. Shopify links accounts by owner, bank, address and device. A second store under a new email tends to get the same hold, and the original review gets worse.

How long a hold lasts

Review holds commonly clear within a few business days of a complete reply, but merchants report waits of two to four weeks when documents go back and forth. Reserves run for the period stated in the notice, often 30 to 120 days. A post-termination hold runs the full reserve window, and Shopify's help centre describes 120 days as the usual figure, with dispute liability continuing after that.

Two things shorten the wait: a complete first reply, and no new risk signals while the review is open. Two things lengthen it: partial documents, and a fresh wave of unfulfilled or disputed orders.

Keep taking orders while the hold clears

The hold blocks payouts from Shopify Payments. It does not block you from accepting payments through another gateway, and Shopify allows third-party gateways on every plan (a third-party transaction fee applies on most plans; see how those fees work).

That is where CascadeCheckout fits. Your buyers keep pressing Buy on your Shopify store. The checkout step runs on a subdomain of your own brand, connected to a gateway account you already hold or one that approves your category. Payouts from that gateway follow that gateway's schedule, outside the hold. Every order is written back into Shopify with line items, buyer, shipping address and discount code, tagged [cascade], so fulfilment, apps and reports carry on as before.

Nothing about this touches the money Shopify is already holding. It is a cash-flow bridge, not a way to get the held balance out. Keep answering Shopify's questions in parallel; if the review clears, you can keep both routes and let the cascade rotate between them when one declines.

What not to do

Frequent questions

Can I still sell while Shopify Payments is on hold?

Yes. A payout hold pauses money leaving the Shopify Payments balance. Orders still process. You can also add a third-party gateway or an own-domain checkout so new sales settle outside the hold.

Does adding another gateway make the hold worse?

No. Shopify permits third-party gateways on all plans. The review looks at fulfilment, disputes and documents, not at whether you added a second payment method.

How long does Shopify hold your money after a hold?

Review holds usually resolve in days to a few weeks after a complete reply. Reserves and post-termination holds commonly run 30 to 120 days, as stated in your notice.

Will Shopify release funds if I switch to another processor?

Switching does not release held funds. Held funds are released on Shopify's timeline after the review or reserve window. A second processor only affects new orders.

Does CascadeCheckout get the held balance back?

No. We are checkout software. We connect your store to your own gateway so new orders keep paying out. The held balance stays with Shopify until they release it.

Bring your store URL and the gateway that already said yes.

CascadeCheckout is checkout software, not a payment service provider, bank or merchant-account seller. You contract with your own gateway or acquirer, disclose your real business category to them, and receive payouts from them. We never hold funds and we do not promise that any processor will approve you.
