Reserves, 30-day holds, 120-day holds, "further review" queues — Shopify Payments freezes are the expensive part of a category flag. The funds already in the reserve are stuck. What you control is the next sale. Move checkout off Shopify Payments this week, wire your own MIDs, and stop feeding fresh revenue into the same freeze.
The reserve email lands. Payouts pause. The dashboard shows a growing "available soon" balance you cannot touch. Support responses take days. Meanwhile ads keep spending, orders keep landing, and every one of those new orders goes into the same locked pool. By week three the reserve is bigger than the appeal is worth waiting for.
Operators default to two responses. Either sit on the store and wait, or open a new one on a new EIN. Waiting is slow bleed. New store is a two-week rebuild plus a fresh acquirer risk that will hit the same wall.
The third path is to keep the store, keep the products, and swap the checkout out from under Shopify Payments. New sales route through the gateway you bring — offshore MID, high-risk desk, NMI, Nuvei, Adyen. Payouts land in your own bank on that gateway's schedule, not in Shopify's reserve.
Shopify Payments is one payment method inside a much larger platform. The store, products, apps, discount codes, customers, fulfillment, ERPs and marketing pixels are all separate systems. A Shopify Payments freeze does not touch any of them. What breaks is the checkout button that used to route to Shopify Payments. Everything else — your storefront theme, your Klaviyo flows, your fulfillment app, your tracking pixel — keeps working.
What "separating the checkout" actually means. Buyers add to cart on your storefront the same way as before. When they hit Buy, they land on checkout.your-brand.com instead of Shopify's hosted checkout. Card entered, gateway captures, order writes back to Shopify Admin tagged [cascade]. Same order timeline, same fulfillment app, same reports. The only visible change: buyers no longer land on shop.app.
API keys for the gateways that will accept your category. If you do not have a replacement gateway yet, we can point you to acquirers active in your vertical.
We provision checkout.your-brand.com with TLS, PCI-tokenization, mobile-first UX. Native Shopify Payments buttons suppressed.
Cascade auto-rotates on decline, timeout, throttle, velocity block. Buyer never sees a decline screen.
Yes. Your Shopify store still works. The frozen funds are stuck with Shopify Payments; the store itself is untouched. Move checkout off Shopify Payments and route new sales through your own gateway so the next dollar is not caught in the same freeze.
Reserve windows vary but 30, 90 and 120-day holds are common on flagged accounts. Chargeback thresholds and category risk push holds longer. There is no negotiated release schedule you can count on.
No. Every day on Shopify Payments while under review is another day of new revenue that can be swept into the reserve. Rebuild the checkout in parallel. If the appeal wins, keep the cascade as a backup route.
Shopify permits a short list of third-party gateways inside native checkout, and even those may be blocked while your account is under review. Own-domain checkout via CascadeCheckout bypasses that list — you plug in any gateway with an API.
Bring your Shopify domain + the replacement gateway.
