Shopify checkout customization without Plus: what you can change, and the route past the limits.

Shopify's checkout is the most tested checkout in ecommerce and the least customisable. On non-Plus plans you get branding controls and a growing set of app extensions; layout, fields, flow and payment logic stay Shopify's. Here is the honest map of what is possible on each plan, and what to do when the thing you need is not on it.

What every plan can change

Branding. Logo, colours, fonts, background image, button shapes, through the checkout editor.
Fields. Show or require phone, company and address line 2; collect tips; marketing consent.
Express checkout order. Which wallets appear and in what order, within Shopify's rules.
Thank-you and order-status pages. App blocks and content through checkout UI extensions.
Payment and delivery customisation functions. Hide, rename or reorder payment and shipping methods based on cart, customer or address, via public apps.
Discounts, validation and cart transforms. Shopify Functions available through apps on all plans.

What needs Plus

Checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps themselves, not just post-purchase pages.
Custom Shopify Functions you write yourself rather than install from an app.
Checkout branding API access, B2B checkout controls and some post-purchase extension points.
Offsite payment apps from providers that have built one.

Plus starts at a few thousand dollars a month, which is why most stores that want a different checkout look elsewhere first.

What died with checkout.liquid

Until 2024, Plus merchants could edit the checkout template directly and change almost anything. Shopify deprecated checkout.liquid for the information, shipping and payment pages in August 2024 and for the thank-you and order-status pages in August 2025, replacing it with Checkout Extensibility. What you still cannot do on any plan

Restructure the layout: one-page versus three-step is Shopify's decision.
Put your own payment gateway behind the card form if Shopify does not list it.
Retry a declined card on a second processor.
Present prices and charge in the buyer's currency without Shopify Payments.
Run the checkout on a subdomain you fully control, with your own scripts and your own order of steps.

The fully custom route

When the list above contains the thing you need, the answer is a checkout that runs on your own domain and writes orders back into Shopify. Can you customise Shopify checkout without Plus?

Branding, some fields, wallet order, thank-you page blocks and payment or delivery rules through apps. Layout, flow and the card form itself stay Shopify's on every plan.

Can I change the layout of Shopify checkout?

Not in Shopify's own checkout. A checkout hosted on your own domain can use any layout and writes orders back into Shopify.

Do checkout apps still work after checkout.liquid was removed?

Only apps rebuilt on Checkout Extensibility. Anything that injected scripts into the old template stopped working in 2024 and 2025.

Will a custom checkout break my Shopify apps?

Apps that read orders keep working because orders are written back into Shopify. Apps that inject into Shopify's checkout page do not run on an external checkout.
