One-page checkout

Shopify one-page checkout: when it converts better, and how to get a real one.

Shopify moved every store to a one-page checkout layout in 2023, so the old one-page-versus-three-step debate is mostly settled by default. What merchants ask now is why their one-page checkout still leaks buyers, and what a single-page checkout they actually control could do differently. Both answers are below.

What the evidence says about page count

Page count matters less than what is on the page. Studies of checkout usability consistently find the same drivers of abandonment: forced account creation, surprise costs shown late, too many fields, weak trust signals, and payment methods the buyer does not have. A one-page layout helps by showing everything at once and cutting navigation, and it hurts when it crams a long form above the pay button on a phone. Shopify's own move to one page reflected that: fewer steps, same fields, better visibility of totals.

Why a Shopify one-page checkout still leaks

What a single-page checkout you control does differently

1

One column, one thumb

Contact, delivery, payment and total in one scroll, tuned for the phone the buyer is holding.

2

Rules per market

Phone optional here, required there; address line 2 only where couriers need it; dial code follows the delivery country.

3

Recovery built in

Soft declines retried on the next gateway without the buyer noticing; abandoned sessions recoverable by link.

CascadeCheckout's checkout is single-page by design and runs on a subdomain of your brand. It reads the cart, shipping rates and discount codes from Shopify, captures payment through your gateways, and writes the order back. See the flow.

Order bumps and upsells on one page

A bump is a tick-box offer beside the pay button: a warranty, a refill, a smaller companion product. It is the highest-converting upsell placement in ecommerce because the buyer has already decided to pay. One-click post-purchase upsells follow on the thank-you step, charged against the same token so there is no re-entry. Both are configured per store from the console, with product names read from Shopify. Checkout upsells in detail.

Measuring it

Compare checkout completion rate, not overall conversion, before and after: the share of sessions that reached the checkout and paid. Track it by device and by payment method, and watch decline rate separately from abandonment; a recovered decline is a sale that used to be counted as a lost buyer. Benchmarks and what moves them.

Frequent questions

Does Shopify have a one-page checkout?

Yes. Shopify rolled a one-page layout to all stores in 2023. Its structure is fixed; you can brand it and adjust some fields.

Is one-page checkout better than multi-step?

Usually, on mobile, when the form is short and totals are visible. Page count matters less than field count, trust signals and payment methods.

Can I add an order bump to Shopify checkout?

Not inside Shopify's checkout on most plans. Post-purchase upsells are available through apps. In-checkout bumps need a checkout you control.

Will a custom one-page checkout keep my Shopify orders?

Yes. Orders are written back into Shopify with full detail and tags.
