Stripe terminations follow a script: email, freeze, 90-day reserve, no live human. On Shopify that hits twice — once for Stripe itself, and often for Shopify Payments in regions where Shopify Payments runs on Stripe rails. The store is fine. The payment step is not. Cascade wires a non-Stripe gateway into Shopify checkout on your own domain and rotates through a second MID as backup.
The Stripe email lands. The dashboard shows the reserve balance. Payouts pause. Support ticket goes into a queue with a public-facing "we cannot discuss individual account decisions" template response.
Two default responses. Open a new Stripe on a new EIN — Stripe fingerprints correlate fast, next termination lands inside 30 days. Or move off Stripe entirely to another gateway that accepts the category. The second option is right. The mistake operators make is picking one replacement — because the next replacement is a single point of failure the same way Stripe was.
Shopify itself is not Stripe. Products, apps, discount codes, customer accounts, fulfillment, ERPs and marketing pixels are all independent. What breaks is the checkout button routing to Stripe. Move the checkout to a URL you own, wire it to a gateway that accepts your category, and Shopify continues.
API keys for the replacement — NMI, Nuvei, Airwallex, Adyen high-risk, Checkout.com, PXP, Whop, offshore MID.
Second gateway wired in cascade priority so a termination on route 1 is a routing decision, not an outage.
checkout.your-brand.com replaces Shopify's checkout URL. Order still writes back to Shopify Admin tagged [cascade].
Same-store Stripe replacement. You do not need a new EIN, new Shopify plan, new theme, or new SKU catalog. Only the checkout page and the gateway change. Historic Shopify orders, customer accounts, apps and reports all stay.
Shopify itself is separate from Stripe. If Stripe terminates you, Shopify Payments (which uses Stripe under the hood in many regions) may also freeze — but the Shopify store, products, apps, customers and fulfillment stay intact. You keep the store, plug in a replacement gateway, keep selling.
Stripe correlates accounts by EIN, bank, device fingerprint and store metadata. A new Stripe on the same store, same category, same operator typically gets flagged fast. Better path: move to a different gateway on your own-domain checkout while cascading a second MID as backup.
Depends on vertical. NMI, Nuvei, Airwallex, Adyen high-risk desk, Checkout.com, PXP, Whop, offshore acquirers. Run more than one so the next termination is a routing decision, not an outage.
Yes, provided your Shopify account itself is not under review. Own-domain checkout via CascadeCheckout wires a non-Stripe gateway into Shopify without touching Shopify's approved-gateway list.
Any gateway. Any category. Live in 24-48 hours.
